What is sustainability and why should I care?

In today's world, embracing sustainability isn't just a trend—it's a must. Between climate change, resource depletion, and ever increasing environmental degradation, adopting a sustainable lifestyle has never been more important. But how do you even start? In this guide, we'll explore the basics of sustainability and provide practical tips to help you jumpstart your journey towards a more eco-friendly way of living.

What is Sustainability?

At its core, sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It encompasses three main pillars:

Environmental sustainability

This involves minimising our impact on the planet by reducing waste, conserving resources, and protecting natural habitats.

Social sustainability

Economic sustainability

For the purposes of this however, we're primarily focusing on our environmental impact.

But what, you may ask, can I actually do to affect this in my day to day life?

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

  • Reduce waste by avoiding single-use plastics and opting for reusable alternatives (water bottles, shopping bags, containers).

  • Reuse items whenever possible, such as jars for storage or packaging materials for shipping.

  • Recycle paper, plastic, glass, and metal according to your local recycling guidelines.

Conserve Energy:

Save Water:

Choose Sustainable Transportation:

Support Sustainable Products:

Reduce Meat Consumption:

Practice Mindful Consumption:

Support Renewable Energy:

Educate Yourself and Others:

Get Involved Locally:

The views I hear a lot surrounding the sustainability chat are either "It's too much effort", "It costs too much money", or the very common misconception that "It just doesn't affect me". If you've ever had one of those thoughts, let me change your mind.

Everything listed above is what you can do. These reasons however, are why you should do them.

Long Term Cost Savings

By implementing some of the lifestyle changes listed above you can potentially save 30-50% on your water and 50%-100% of your electricity bills. You can even earn extra income by selling your solar energy back to the grid! You would save hundreds in grocery shops over the year by eliminating the ongoing expenses that disposable items incur and only be required to spend a fraction of waste disposal costs by composting, reusing, or recycling.

Long Term Stability

Embarking on a sustainable lifestyle journey may seem daunting at first, but every small step makes a difference. By implementing these basic principles of sustainability into your daily life, you can contribute to a healthier planet and create a better future for yourself and generations to come. Remember, sustainability is not about perfection—it's about progress. Start today and you can make a significant positive impact on the world around you.
